I consider myself a post-figurative painter, where the figure must represent something beyond narration.
My work mines a variety of sources that push the historical understanding of figurative painting, more narrowly portrait painting, in numerous directions.
I work along the lines of current modes of portraiture, emphasizing the psychological and emotional states of the subject matter and mixing this with prehaps something current about the state of identity or a direction in popular culture.
While historical influences might be as far flung as Egon Schiele to Andy Warhol, more recent influences would include John Currin and Glen Brown.
I am also interested in fashion photography, advertising, film stills, publicity photos, police stories and mug shots, as well as theatre costume design, and pattern and decoration.
